AKILAH HARTGROVE
PROGRAMS AND COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
Akilah Hartgrove is a passionate arts administrator and DC native who is dedicated to using the arts as a tool for advocacy and collective healing for marginalized and underrepresented communities. She serves as the Programs and Communications Manager for The Nicholson Project where she develops public programming related to exhibitions, residencies, and the garden, and works to share Nicholson’s events and opportunities with the community.
She is inspired by the “Where We At” Black Women Artists, Inc. (WWA), a collective of Black women artists affiliated with the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This Collective aimed to broaden and include other voices and perspectives, providing connection and support to fellow artists. It is this community-minded thinking that Akilah brings to The Nicholson Project.
As a former FoodCorps alum, Akilah honed her background in arts administration working with organizations and institutions such as Americans for the Arts, The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, and Glenstone Museum. Within each of her roles, Akilah has focused on communications and marketing, nutrition education, engaging the community, and supporting the production of public events, experience that she is excited to bring to her role at The Nicholson Project.
